PFC COLOR DAYS 2015!
Girls 15 and Under Basketball Game
Pine Forest Camp was rockin’ today as we played our sister camp, Camp Timber Tops at Chadwin Court. The music was blaring and both sides were cheering and dancing in the stands. Blue and gold outfits on one side and red and white on the other! The game was really secondary. Pine Forest won but Timber Tops had just as much fun.
Sadly, tie dye week ended yesterday and pretty much anything in camp that could be tie dyed has been. Next up, A-game shirts and bunk plaques!
Tomorrow is the big 5K race around camp that campers have been training for all summer. After the big race we will have an all-camp Steeple Chase race followed by a huge rope burning. But more on that tomorrow!
Tonight a special snack, Philly soft pretzels for all!!
Keep on Dancing!
Three words: “Keep playing tennis!” That is the mantra that Uncle Marvin
Black lives by and he shared those words with the Marvin Black USTA Tennis Tournament participants this morning. Uncle Marv is 90-years-old and he still plays tennis almost every day. He told the players that it is a lifetime skill and that they should stick with
it. Thanks to Uncle Marv, Pine Forest was one of the first camps in the United
States to host a sanctioned USTA tournament and it’s going stronger than
ever before than 30 years later.
While our tennis players competed, our Junior boys spent the morning at the lake and our Senior and Hi Senior boys played Capture the Asagi. Meanwhile, in arts & crafts, the Senior 8s from girls’ camp began their banquet preparations and tie dye was a huge hit. Over at Center Stage, Kelli Moshen has entered the dance floor! She will be here for a week teaching our campers a dance routine. They couldn’t have been more excited to see her back in the dining hall at lunch! Perhaps it was Klezmer band at last night’s campfire for all girls and lower camp boys that gave them the dancing bug.
Our CAs left for their trip to Washington, DC this morning and look forward to exploring the city, as well as local colleges.
A Parent’s Perspective
Here we are. Visiting day and trips behind us. Five weeks down and less than two weeks remain. As Mickey says, the best is yet to come! That’s quite a promise, considering how amazing camp has been so far. Our children are in the heart of making their memories and friends for life. How exciting!
Camp goes so quickly. As I say to my kids in the closing of almost every letter, “continue loving every day and every night. You’ll be home before you know it, counting down the days until you get to go back. Don’t waste a minute. Continue to try new things, make new friends, look up at the stars and breathe in the mountain air. Home is always here, waiting for you, but camp goes so quickly. So, love up every remaining day and night.”
The Best is Yet to Come!
It must be August.
Last night, for the first time, you could hear them…crickets. They’re back. Just as darkness fell you could hear a few. Soon it will be a symphony of sound. It’s a sure sign that the last chapter of camp has begun. Only two weeks of fun left, the Camp show, Color Days, Play-offs, the Banquet, Candlelight ceremony and more. It’s a lot to squeeze in just 14 days, but we’re ready!
Today was another beauty. It was a great day for the lake, water-skiing, horseback riding and leagues. And the sign went up for the Color Days theme contest! Here are a few (these are actual suggestions):
The silly ones:
Stuffed rigatoni vs. Baked Ziti
Messy vs. Clean
Ducks vs. Sky
Underwear vs. Socks
And some that could work:
Cold vs. Hot
Earth vs. Space
Ice vs. Sun
Angels vs. Devils
DC Comics vs. Marvel
Get ready for surprise. Get ready for excitement. Get ready for fun.
Spotlight on: CAs!
After all of this talk and excitement about the Senior and Hi Senior trips, we thought it might be fun for you to hear about our CA trips! During the second half of the summer, our CAs go on trips to Boston, Washington, DC, and New York City to check out several area colleges. It’s a good way for them to get a feel for what kind of college would be a good fit for them. Do I want a city school? Do I want a small school? Could I envision myself as one of the students I just saw in the dining hall? Does the school offer a major I’m interested in? The list goes on! There’s nothing like experiencing colleges alongside your camp friends.
Their first stop was Boston. On their first day there, they got to spend some time exploring Newbury Street and went to a restaurant that offers made to order stir fry! They then checked into the Boston University dorms where they would be spending the next couple of nights. On day two, they took a tour of Northeastern University, ate lunch on campus, then headed back to BU for a tour. Next up: Quincy Market! Day three started at Tufts University, where our CAs had an information session, tour, and lunch on campus. What a productive three days!
On Monday, the CAs are headed to The District! When they arrive, they will get to explore a museum of their choice, followed by dinner at the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl! After spending the night at American University, they will head to George Washington University for a tour and lunch – then back to American for a tour! Their night will be spent enjoying dinner and movie at Gallery Place. As their trip comes to a close, they will be stopping by the University of Maryland on the way back to Greeley for a tour.
That brings us to New York City! On August 12th, the CAs will be taking a day trip to The Big Apple where, as you can imagine, it’s easy to fill a day! They will be taking tours of New York University and Columbia University and will have time to hang out in Union Square and Times Square. They’ll end their final college trip of the summer with dinner at a Food Network approved barbeque restaurant in Times Square!
Parents, we’re glad we could knock out some of those college tours for you and we can’t wait to hear your CAs’ feedback!
Welcome, TOP Cooks Camp!
We are so happy our Seniors and Hi-Seniors are home safely from their trips! We’re all back together again and even enjoyed popsicles after dinner! Our 7th graders relaxed in the Adirondacks, the 8th graders enjoyed Ben and Jerry’s in Burlington, Vermont, the 9th graders enjoyed a Red Sox game, and our 10th graders bobsledded like Olympic gold medalists.
Lower Camp (Still) Rules!
Today was day two of lower camp takeover. The day started with waffles with whipped cream – it doesn’t get much better than that! We beat the morning heat at our pool luau and had pizza for lunch, during which there was no shortage of singing. We had Mr. and Mrs. PFC this afternoon, followed by dinner and a coed social! The theme? Nerds and jocks! We can’t wait to show you the pictures! Speaking of which, we’ll have many pictures posted tomorrow night from our senior trips. We can’t wait to have them back at camp TONIGHT! It just wasn’t the same without them!
